TEXT: Luke 12:15-21

SUMMARY: Jesus tells a parable that teaches the foolishness of relying upon riches.

APPLICATION: Especially with the fears wrapped up in today’s economy, it’s easy to wish we were rich. If only we were rich, the thinking goes, we wouldn’t have anything to worry about. But Jesus cautions as to why that might not be such a good thing — for several reasons.

SUMMARY: Jesus visits the home of Martha and Mary. While Martha is trying to cook up a wonderful meal, Jesus cooks up a special of his own concerning priorities — and why Mary’s choice of priority was best.

APPLICATION: So many things demand our time. Even God seems awful demanding sometimes. So what is of first importance? Jesus gives us some guidance as to how to choose our priorities.

SUMMARY: In another of Jesus’ amazing “I Am” statements, he declares himself to be our good shepherd.

APPLICATION: What does being our good shepherd mean for us? What is Jesus really saying by giving us this analogy? Why do we need a shepherd anyway? We’ll look for these answers (and more) this week.
